Tax refunds held up on fraud suspicion

The state of New Jersey is allegedly withholding tax refunds for many residents
because it wants to investigate them further among reports of growing
tax refund fraud. According to a report, the state believes that many
tax returns could be fraudulent because people have stolen identities
of other people and are filing tax returns under their names.
While the state isn’t naming any people specifically that might be
committing fraud, it is saying that it believes the problem is growing
and should investigate potential fraud before issuing tax returns. People
might be upset by the fact that their tax returns might be delayed, but
they should also understand their rights if they become the subject of
a state investigation for fraud. New Jersey may choose to prosecute people
that it believes have committed fraud.
These accusations can ruin a person’s reputation. It is important the
people who are accused of crimes understand their rights. They might be
wise to speak with an experienced criminal defense attorney. They can
help a person work to form a rigorous criminal defense. Sometimes tax
fraud issues arise from a simple miscommunication or an error on a tax
return. While having tax returns delayed is disappointing, it can be even
more shocking when a person is accused of tax fraud.
These accusations can result in consequences at a person’s job and
might also affect their family life. An attorney can help to clear a person’s
name and hopefully restore their reputation within their community.
