Designate a driver for this weekend’s festivities

With St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Saturday this year, the New Jersey
Division of Highway Traffic Safety is advising people who are planning
to drink to make sure that they plan ahead so they aren’t drinking
and driving. Police officers are going to be out in full force to stop
drunk drivers.
Last year during the St. Patrick’s Day weekend, there were five fatalities
on New Jersey roads as well as three pedestrian fatalities.
Officers are also encouraging motorists to be aware of extra pedestrian
traffic over the weekend and encouraging those that are intoxicated and
walking, that the safest way for them to get home is by taking a cab or
having a designated driver.
The Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control is going to have enforcement
teams at bars and restaurants over the weekend as well, to make sure that
these establishments are carding everyone and not serving customers who
are obviously intoxicated. They are reminding these establishments that
it is their responsibility to be aware of the amount of alcohol that is
being consumed by individuals and that they shouldn’t be serving intoxicated people.
If you are partaking in the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations there are
few things you should keep in mind to ensure that this is a safe and fun weekend:
- Designate a driver or plan to take mass transit or a cab to take you home.
- Report suspected drunk drivers and pedestrians to law enforcement.
- Don’t let your friends drive drunk.
The goal of these extra patrols and enforcement is for the safety of everyone.
Law enforcement wants people to go out and have a good time, but to be
smart about it.
