Two people were arrested in New Jersey after allegedly stealing from two
school districts. Both women were arrested on the charge of second-degree
theft by unlawful taking or disposition. According to a report, one of
the women worked for the school districts as a Transportation Manager.
The charges allege that she send checks for services not received by a
fake transportation services company. The other woman arrested is her
mother, who is accused of cashing the checks.
Prosecutors believe the amount stolen from both school districts totaled
over $500,000 between July 2005 and August 2008. If convicted, the women
face five to 10 years in prison and a large fine.
Many times when charges such as this surface, they stem from a lengthy
investigation. It is important that people who are accused of such crimes
understand their rights. They might be wise to speak with an experienced
New Jersey white collar crimes attorney. They can help make sure the person
doesn’t incriminate themselves and help them review evidence against
them. Understanding the legal process is also important after an arrest
for an alleged crime.
When an arrest stems from an investigation, it is important that the accused
understands the details of their case. Many times complex investigations
can lead to the rights of the accused being violated. If someone’s
rights are violated, some of the evidence or the case might be dropped
because they would be unable to obtain a fair trial.
